It won’t be an exaggeration to say that although the times have changed, the mindsets haven’t kept pace. The deep-rooted patriarchy still manifests itself in casual remarks like “boys are better at math” or “it’s unbecoming for a girl to swear!”
Why not perceive the hijab as just a fabric covering the head – why must we classify a woman who wears it (or doesn’t) into a certain category? Neither should the hijab stand for oppression nor should it be glorified as a measure of a woman’s decency or character.
Its therefore more than a personal loss that I feel today. It’s as if I have lost a slice of history – a valuable connection with a celebrated past.
Little did I know that a chance meeting with a group of gallant gentlemen would result in the tryst of a lifetime!
Are women employees akin to use and throw commodities – to acknowledge their value only till the time that they are not encumbered by responsibility and discarded the moment they advance in their personal lives? This attitude is as chauvinistic as the other prejudices that abound towards the feminine gender – it is a tad more hypocritical too.
“Are you working?” This is perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions by women to women when they meet for the first time. On the face of it, it seems a most innocent question – pleasant small talk, perfect to break the ice. But the answer to that question often holds the key to how she will be assessed and summed up.
